African knowledge and experience have contributed much to the evolution of the SSR concept. DCAF’s Sub-Saharan Africa Division provides medium to long-term support to local, national and regional stakeholders in Sub-Saharan Africa, for the development of effective security institutions that are accountable to the state and its citizens.

Main areas of work include:

  • support to the development and implementation of regional norms
  • strategic and operational advice to governments to ensure well-coordinated and holistic reforms
  • strengthening of internal accountability and control mechanisms in security institutions
  • support to external oversight actors, including parliaments, independent bodies and civil society
